Grinder Pit Crew Volunteers

The Shire of Moora is working with the Watheroo Development Association to facilitate the Gravel Grinder Challenge bike ride between Moora and Watheroo to raise awareness of mental health. The overall aim of the event is to maximize active and volunteer participation.

We are hoping to use the event as a way to include a wide range of people including participants, volunteers and spectators. Around 10% of the adult population are diagnosed with a mental health problem through all different circumstances every year, our aim is to spend one day building strong relationships, physical activity, and laughter to create an atmosphere for people who may be dealing with a mental health issue either themselves or with a family member or friend. We are hoping by just attending the day there is a feeling of not being alone and that there is always someone to reach out too.

By incorporating physical activity in the form of cycling with mental health promotion, the Shire of Moora and the Watheroo Development Association aim to promote regular participation in physical activity, cycling in particular, as a suitable and accessible prevention strategy in relation to mental illness.  Farming communities have limited access to structured fitness programs and gyms, and in many cases small country towns are experiencing population decreases resulting in the dissolution of sporting clubs such as football, tennis and cricket.  With such limited opportunities for participation in physical activity, and more than half the wheat belt population recording insufficient levels of physical activity, the prevalence of mental health issues in the region is increased.  Cycling is an easily accessible form of physical activity suitable for men, women, and children alike, regardless of geographic location, and is a proactive means of improving and maintaining good physical, mental, and social well being for country residents.

In order to make the Watheroo Gravel Grinder a reality, the Shire of Moora and the Watheroo Development Association are seeking volunteer assistance on the day. If you feel you would like to take part as a volunteer please go to the contact page on this website and express your interest leaving your name and contact number. We will be seeking people to help with catering, marshalling, pit stop attendance and people to hand out refreshments. Make this day fun so if you are attending at pit stops feel free to add a theme and dress up for the day don't worry though its not compulsory.

There will be entertainment and refreshments later at the Watheroo Pavilion and all are welcome. Camping is also available.
